Honeymoon Bridge |
Located in Jackson, Carroll County, spanning the Ellis River, the Honeymoon Bridge was constructed with exposed sides and in the Paddleford truss style in about 1876. A sidewalk was added in 1930 and the Route 16 entrance was rebuilt in 1965 to improve visibility and to provide parking for visitors.
Charles Austin Broughton, who was a sergeant in the 18th Regiment of the New Hampshire Volunteers, Company E, built the bridge with his son Frank. Broughton lived on the east side of the Saco River at his dairy as a finish carpenter, avid fiddler and skillful bear hunter. He worked for ten years with the Swift River Lumber company in Albany, New Hampshire.
The bridge qualifies to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
