The Sentinel Pine Bridge, located East of U.S. Route 3 in Grafton County, spans the Flume Gorge and was built using a sixty-foot section of a tree that once stood as a kind of sentry on guard at the pool in Lincoln. The Stringer style bridge was built by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests in 1939 over this ninety-foot tall pine tree, to protect and preserve it, after it had blown over in a 1938 hurricane. The footbridge was maintained by the Society until 1948 when its ownership was transferred to the State.
