White Mountains |
The White Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountains system. They stretch in a southwestern direction from Maine into New Hampshire, covering about 1000 square miles. There are a number of ranges, of which the Presidential Range is the most important. The chief mountains in this range bear the names of early President of the United States. Mount Washington is the highest of these and the highest peak in New Hampshire. A total of 68 other peaks in the White Mountains are over 3,900 feet. Since 1911, much of the terrain has been included in the White Mountains National Forest.
A section of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail runs through the White Mountains, with its highest point on the trail within Mount Washington State Park. More backcountry visitors are attracted to this portion between Franconia Notch State Park, NH, along Mt. Washington at 6,288 feet, through Gorham, than any other on the trail.
