The White Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountains system. They stretch in a southwestern direction from Maine into New Hampshire, covering about 1000 square miles. There are a number of ranges, of which the Presidential Range is the most important. The chief mountains in this range bear the names of early President of the United States.
