The Township of Aberdeen municipal government is one of thirty-nine municipalities in New Jersey. It was organized as a Faulkner Act Council-Manager Plan where all policy making power is concentrated in the council. Aberdeen is located in Monmouth County in the Shore Region.
The earliest European settlement here was in 1650 under the Dutch. In 1664 the entire area came under English possession. The 1680's saw an influx of Scottish immigrants fleeing religious persecution.
Aberdeen is home to 13 parks most of which include playground equipment, and one of which has an in-line hockey rink. Matawan Regional High School has a motto stating 'excellence in education.' Stop by the Court Jester Restaurant for American and Tex-Mex dishes sure to satisfy. A short trip up the highway brings an array of local attractions including Cheesequake State Park, Newport Harbor, Matawan Creek, Holmdel County Park, Funtime America, and seven assorted museums. Local historical sites include Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Boxwood Hall State Historic Site, Liberty Hall, and the Stephen Crane House, where the author of 'The Red Badge of Courage' resided.
