Avon by the Sea is located in Monmouth County, in the Shore Region, south of Long Branch between Asbury Park and Spring Lake, along Highway 35 near the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
It was developed as a resort community in the late 1800's by a Philadelphia businessman, Edward Batchelor. Batchelor was a wealthy man visiting Ocean Grove to go fishing when he passed through what is now Avon by the Sea. He saw that the land was for sale and the next day bought 300-acres and started building the town. The present public school was built in 1908 and the library was built in 1916.
Avon by the Sea is surrounded by three bodies of water. Sylvan Lake is to the north, which is home to many swans, south is the Shark River inlet, and on the east is the Atlantic Ocean.
Fishing, boating, and scuba-diving are year round activities that are always enjoyed.
