East Point Lighthouse is located in Heislerville, near the city of
Bivalve in
Cumberland County. It is at the mouth of the Maurice River and is the last remaining lighthouse on the New Jersey side of the Delaware Bay.
Besides being the last standing lighthouse on the New Jersey side of the Delaware Bay, it is the second oldest lighthouse in New Jersey. The 40 foot lighthouse was constructed in 1849 by the United States Lighthouse Establishment and uses a sixth order Fresnel lens.
Originally named the Maurice River Lighthouse, it has been a guiding light not only to fishermen, oystermen, and recreational boaters, but was a landmark during the day for hunters, trappers, and surveyors.
The lighthouse has been worn down from vandalism and weather but in 1971 it was badly damaged by a trespasser who lit the lighthouse on fire and destroyed the roof and lantern room. It is now under restoration.
