The ten-mile section of the Great Egg Harbor River from its mouth at Great Egg Harbor Bay near
Ocean City to just south of
Mays Landing is part of the habitat for eight rare and/or endangered species of birds. This river corridor is also part of the unique Pine Barrens area and includes Bottomland Hardwood Forest and Evergreen Shrub Bog, as well as stands of significant and rare Atlantic white cedar.
