Hereford Inlet Lighthouse is located at Hereford Inlet in
North Wildwood, part of
Cape May County, on the south Jersey shore. The 49.5 foot tall lighthouse began operations on May 11, 1874, making the sea visible for 13 nautical miles. A severe storm in 1913 damaged the light's foundation, requiring it to be moved westward about 150 feet.
In 1964 the old light was replaced by an automatic light tower erected behind the lighthouse. The lighthouse was closed and boarded up for 18 years until the mayor and city fought to re-open and renovate the lighthouse. Now the Hereford Lighthouse is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places.
