The Speedwell Iron Works was built by Stephen Vail in the early 1800s. The site contains the home and factory of the founder, who in 1818 made the engine for the Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. In 1837, Samuel F.B. Morse and Stephen's son, Alfred, conducted the first public demonstration of the telegraph at this location. There are drawings for early engine parts and other items relating to the ironworks. A collection of early communications equipment traces the history of the electromagnetic telegraph. Five farm buildings and three historic houses are on the grounds. Call for hours of operation.
