Lucy the Margate Elephant is a building in the shape of an elephant, complete with a canopied seat called a 'howdah.' Six stories high and built of wood and tin, it was constructed in 1881 by real estate developer James V Lafferty to draw prospective buyers to his holdings. It has served as a real estate office, a residence and a tavern. Free band concerts are given Thursday evenings 7 to 8:30pm in July and August. A 20-minute guided tour is offered every half-hour daily 10am-8pm June 15-Labor Day; Saturday & Sunday 10am-4:30pm, April 1-June 14 and day after Labor Day-October 31. Last tour begins 30 minutes before closing.
