Located in Montclair, part of Essex County, the museum's neo-classical Greek revival structure, comprises 25,000 square feet, houses seven galleries, holds the Museum Store, and is home to the Montclair Art Museum Yard School of Art. The building, designed by Albert B. Ross of New York, opened in 1914. It is sited on 3.5 landscaped acres.

The Art School offers a year-round program of classes for children, teens and adults in drawing, painting, pastel and mixed-media taught by a distinguished faculty. Located in an adjacent building are the administrative offices and The LeBrun Library, which contains 14,000 volumes, 4,000 bound periodicals and 20,000 slides. The library is an art reference resource to Museum members, students, scholars and the general public. The Museum grounds comprise the Van Vleck Arboretum, a collection of trees both native and rare.
