Newark

The city of Newark is the county seat of Essex County. Situated just north of Staten Island, Newark is just west of New York City between Jersey City and Morristown, along Interstate 78 on the banks of the Hudson River.

Newark is the largest city in New Jersey. The first settlers were Puritans from Connecticut. They introduced such stern laws that anyone not belonging to the Congregational Church was discouraged from settling there. The city's original name was Milford, which was incorporated in 1836. From 1748 until 1756, the College of New Jersey was in Newark. The college later moved to Princeton, where it developed into Princeton University. Newark is part of the Newark, New Jersey metro area.
