History sets the stage in this region, studded with sites evoking important events. To begin, the Powhatan Renape Nation, which resides at the Rankokus Indian Reservation in Westampton, is descended from an ancient confederation that at one point comprised more than 30 tribes. Living historical farms, the Delaware River and buildings associated with the French and Revolutionary wars, more than a million acres of pine trees, the Delaware Bay, fresh seafood and produce characterize the area. In Hamilton, the Civil War and Native American Museum Veterans Park presents exhibits of the Native American dating to 8000 B.C., as well as historical examples of the common soldier. Indian King Tavern House Museum in Haddonfield, dating to 1750, is a former tavern and public house where the New Jersey General Assembly met during the Revolutionary War. This also is the birthplace of the Great Seal of the State. At Washington Crossing State Park in Titusville, a re-enactment of Washington crossing the Delaware takes place at Christmas.
By taking the Delafort Ferry at Fort Mott State Park, visitors can tour three forts on the Delaware River. Berthed at the Camden Waterfront, the USS New Jersey Battleship Museum offers tours and tells the story of this most-decorated battleship.
Horse racing enthusiasts will appreciate Garden State Park at Cherry Hill, where thoroughbred racing is held from March through May; and harness racing from September through December.
