A family owned and operated working cattle ranch and guest ranch, not a "dude ranch", located in northeastern New Mexico, in
Quay County. The JX Ranch is a 7,000-acres, is owned and operated by Tom and Mimi Sidwell. On this scenic ranch they pasture around 450 head of cattle (yearling steers). During the summer months they take in guests, no more than four at a time, who want to ride their ranch horses, experience life on a cattle ranch and participate when driving cattle to new pastures. Guests with their own horses are welcome to bring them.
The Sidwells do require that guests have some prior riding experience. They do not ride nose to tail, but spread out when the terrain allows so a rider needs to be able to control their horse. Their horses are very gentle working ranch horses, but they are not 'dude' horses.
On a typical day, they ride 3-5 hours in the morning working cattle, then they may make an additional circle checking on fences and waters. In the afternoon, they usually tend to ranch chores. If they have a little spare time, they may practice roping the 'calf dummy". Guest are welcome to participate in everything they do.
