The Langmuir Lightning Laboratory was built in 1963 near the summit of the 10,783-feet South Baldy Peak to provide the study of cloud processes that produce lightning, hail, and rain. Visitors welcome to the laboratory from end of June to last week of August. A gate blocks the laboratory during the rest of the year, but hikers and picnickers are welcome year-round. The last 10 miles of Forest RD 235 are dirt, primitive and steep; cars with low clearance or in bad condition, travel trailers and motor homes should not use road.
