San Esteban Del Rey Mission

The Largest Early Southwestern Mission, Dates from 1629

Inhabited since the 12th century; 1629-1640 both the Mission and the pueblo are National Historic Landmarks. The sand used in contruction was carried to the mesa top; the log beams were hand-cut and carried from Mount Taylor, over 30 miles away. Within the mission are religious paintings, an altar and images of saints. "Sky City" Acoma Pueblo guided tours include the mission and leave from the visitor center.
