During the war, mail to
Los Alamos scientists was addressed to "P.O. Box 1663,
Santa Fe." It wasn't until 1945 that the existence of Los Alamos could be made public and its own dedicated postmark could be employed. The Post Office opened here in 1948 on the site of the former Ranch School Trading Post.
