Great Bear Lake is one of the largest lakes in the western hemisphere. It lies about 250 miles east of the Rockies and covers 12,275 square miles.

Part of the lake is inside the Arctic Circle. The lake drains into the MacKenzie River through the relatively short Great Bear River, which is much shorter than the lake is long. The lake has an elevation of about 390 feet above sea level and is 1350 feet at its deepest point.
