From its summit on Hole in the Mountain Peak at 11,127 feet near the center of the area, the East Humboldt Range and the Wilderness extends south and north, all just south of Interstate 80. Here in the high country, including 11,020-foot Humboldt Peak in the southern portion, you'll find a very remote area with limited access. Large mammals such as mountain lions, bobcats, deer and mountain goats live in seclusion here. Vegetation is generally sparse: grasses and sage lower down, mountain mahogany and aspen in dense stands higher up. Several trails enter from the west side, usually following small drainages such as First, Second, Third and Fourth Boulder Creeks. Six lakes in the area are home for either cutthroat or brook trout, an attraction to anglers. Most visitors are found at Angel Lake Campground just outside the northeastern boundary.
