One tradition says the community was named for William Hawthorn, a cattleman; another says it was named for the Hawthorne family of Massachusetts, descendants of author Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Hawthorne is located in [y32021], of which it is the county seat, southeast of [reno] between Fallon and Tonopah along US Highway 95 near Walker Lake in the [zsouthe] of the state.
