Mount Charleston Wilderness Area

Search Elko Nevada

This area extends completely across the crest of the Spring Mountain Range and includes its high point on Charleston Peak at 11,918 feet. Short, steep-walled canyons penetrate the range. Here in the high country you'll find a forested oasis, a relief from the heat of southern Nevada where summer temperatures often rise above 100 degrees F . . . relief, but little water (no running streams and precious few springs despite the mountain range's name). Within the area are 18,000 acres of bristlecone pine, the largest stand of these ancient living organisms in the Intermountain West. Approximately 40 miles of trails includes the Bonanza Trail that runs along the spine of the Spring Mountains for approximately 14 miles.
