Mount Moriah Wilderness Area

Search Elko Nevada

In the center of the Wilderness, north and west of Mount Moriah itself (12,050 feet), stretches a plateau called "The Table," a unique world of subalpine vegetation lined with bristlecone and limber pine. You'll be in the northern Snake Range, bounded on the east by Snake Valley and on the west by Spring Valley. Dry pinyon-juniper forestland dominates the lower elevations. Four year-round creeks provide homes for Bonneville cutthroat trout, an attraction for anglers, but the heart of the area tends to be bone dry requiring you to carry all your water. Shallow caves, many containing evidence of prehistoric habitation (such as pictographs), occur often in this Wilderness. The existence of many caves yet undiscovered is strongly suspected. Great Basin National Park lies just to the south. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep are common visitors to Mount Moriah.
