Table Mountain Wilderness Area

Search Elko Nevada

A unique high plateau or "table land" distinguishes Table Mountain Wilderness. On the plateau west of Lower Dry Lake, a strange network of low-lying stone walls give evidence of prehistoric human activity of undetermined purpose. This rolling, semi-forested region attracts hikers and horsepackers. The Monitor Range, in which Table Mountain stands, rises above 10,000 feet and provides a home for one of the largest mule deer herds in the state. A well-established elk herd first introduced in 1979 adds incentive for hunters. Five major streams attract anglers seeking trout, especially Mosquito Creek in the north-central section. Large stands of aspen over much of the mountainsides are unusual in this region of Nevada. In Waterfall Canyon some of the aspen are carved with dates back to 1907. In this canyon you'll find well-preserved samples of Basque sheepherder art which has given this spot the nickname of "Pornographic Grove."
