Verdi is located just west of
Reno between
Sparks and the California state line along Interstate 80 on the banks of the
Truckee River near
Lake Tahoe and Washoe Lake.
Verdi is part of the Reno, Nevada metro area.
It was named after the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. Once a lumber center it declined with the depletion of timber and a disastrous fire in 1926. Verdi was also the site of a major train robbery in 1870. Five men boarded the Central Pacific Overland Express here. They rode off with $41,600 in gold coin, but were later captured and convicted.
