Amityville is located in
Suffolk County and is part of the
Nassau-Suffolk, New York metropolitan area and is in the
Southern Region of the state. Rumor has it the community was named for the amicable settling of a dispute over what the place should be called. Another says it was named for the boat of the town's largest landowner. It was also the setting for 1979 movie, "The Amityville Horror" movie.
