Buffalo is located in Erie County on the Canadian border in northwest New York state and is in the Western Region of the state. It lies along Interstate 90 on the banks of Lake Erie. The city is across the Peace Bridge from the Canadian province of Ontario and a 20-minute drive from the Niagara Falls.

The site was settled in 1780 when members of the Seneca tribe established a village. It became known as Buffalo Creek, named after a nearby stream. The Holland Land Company bought the site in 1790 and had the community platted in 1803.

Today Buffalo is the commercial, political and entertainment hub of an eight-county region consisting of nearly 1.6 million people. Buffalo averages approximately 25 days of snowfall each winter. Summers are mild with breezes from nearby Lake Erie, keeping temperatures moderate and humidity low.

The Buffalo area has sought-after theater, a well known symphony and noted architecture. There also is a wide variety of nearby attractions.
