Canandaigua is located in Ontario County 25 miles SE of Rochester between Geneva and Bloomfield along Highway 20. The city stands on the northern shore of the lake that bears its name.

Canandaigua is part of the Rochester, New York metro area and is located in the Western Region of the state.

Its name derives from Iroquoian for "settlement place" or "chosen spot" and the Pickering Treaty with the Iroquois was signed here in 1794.
