Colonie is located in Albany County County 5 miles NW of Albany along Highway 5 near Thompson Lake Camping Area and is part of the Central Region part of the state. Colonie is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, New York metro area.Its name derived from Dutch for "settlement outside the city".
