Far Rockaway is located in
Queens County in the
Southern Region of the state and is part of the
New York, New York metropolitan area.
It was a popular resort area before the Civil War, frequented by such well-known vacationers as Washington Irving and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Well-known residents have included: Mary Gordon, author and Phil Ochs, singer and songwriter.
