Fulton is located in County 25 miles NW of
Syracuse along Highway 481. Fulton lies along the
Oswego River about 11 miles south of Lake Ontario and in the
Northern Region of the state. The town was founded in the late 18th century by Dutch settlers from the Hudson and Mohawk valleys.
In the 1820s the Oswego Canal, between the Erie Canal and Lake Ontario, opened boosting Fulton's economy. Locks enabled boats to negotiate the falls of the Oswego River, which drop 14 feet, and a series of rapids to the north which drop another 30 feet. An observation are in Canal Park overlooks the lower locks. Recreation Park on Lake Neahthwanta at the west end of town, offers sporting facilities. Fulton is part of the Syracuse, New York metro area.
