Irondequoit is located in Monroe County in the Western Region of the state and is part of the Rochester, New York metropolitan area. Its name derives from Iroquoian for "bay". 19th-century trains brought vacationers from Rochester, but summer retreats declined by 1930. The Natatorium, which opened here in 1925, was billed as the "largest saltwater swimming pool in the world." The venture was a bust. It closed six years later and was converted to a bingo hall.
