Born in New York City to a Puerto Rican mother and Haitian father, Jean-Michel Basquiat grew up in Brooklyn and became a famous New York-based artist, known for his street paintings or graffiti in child-like style.His first one man exhibition, held at the Annina Nosei Gallery, was a tremendous commercial and critical success. In 1982, he was the youngest artist invited to participate in Documenta and in 1983 took part in the Whitney Biennial. Between 1982 and 1985, his work dealt with his uncertainties about black and Hispanic identity.
