Mamaroneck is located in Westchester County in southeast New York between Rye and Larchmont on Highway 1 near New Rochelle in the Southern Region of the state.

One tradition says the community was named after a local chief; others say it is an Indian term variously translated as "the place where fresh water falls into salt" or "the place of rolling stones" or "he assembles the people".
