Margaretville is located in Delaware County southeast of Delhi on Highway 30 in the Southern Region of the state.

It was named after Margaret Lewis the great-granddaughter of Robert Livingston. Margaretville was built near the site of an Indian village known as Pa-ka-tagh-kan.
