Monticello is located in
Sullivan County 33 miles NW of Middletown between Mongaup Valley and Rock Hill along Highway 42 off highway 17 near Swinging Bridge Reservoir in the
Southern Region of the state.
One tradition says the name derives from Italian for "little mountain." Another traces it to the name of Thomas Jefferson's estate in Virginia.
