Mount Defiance is accessed via a road off Highway 22/74.

Historically it was an American blunder who, despite its advantage, deemed it too steep to fortify. Despite advice to the contrary by such figures as Benedict Arnold, John Trumbull and Thaddeus Kosciusko, it was unfortified until the British under Burgoyne dragged cannon up its steep slopes where they remain today. The Americans gave up the forts below. At 853 ft is a scenic overlook of the lake and valley.
