Oneida is located in
Madison County 34 miles east of
Syracuse between Stockbridge and Durhamville along Highway 46 near the Old Erie Canal State Park in the
Central Region of the state. The Oneida Community was founded nearby in 1848 by John Noyes. A religious and social communal experiment, it was abandoned in 1880 and a joint stock corporation was formed to carry on the manufacturing activities. The present corporation has retained some cooperative features; Oneida Ltd. has factories and home offices in the area in Sherrill, where silverware is made. Oneida is part of the
Syracuse, New York metro area.
