Palmyra was the birthplace of Mormonism and the early home of Joseph Smith. The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints was organized and the `Book of Mormon` was published nearby in 1830. A visitor center on the Peter Whitmer Farm, where the church was founded is 5 miles south of Waterloo on Hwy 96. Palmyra is part of the Rochester, New York metro area.
