Shelter Island is located in
Suffolk County in the
Southern Region of the state in Gardiners Bay between the two forks of
Long Island. Shelter Island is part of the
Nassau-Suffolk, New York metro area.
The name is a translation of the Indian name which meant, "island sheltered by islands" and was once a plantation worked by slaves. The schooner "Paragon," which ran blockade during the Napoleonic Wars, was built here.
