Shelter Island is part of the Nassau-Suffolk, New York metro area. The name is a translation of the Indian name which meant, "island sheltered by islands" and was once a plantation worked by slaves. The schooner "Paragon," which ran blockade during the Napoleonic Wars, was built here.
