For over thirty years The Studio Museum in Harlem has been recognized for its catalytic role in promoting African American art and artists within the mainstream of the art work in the United States and on the global arena.
It has supported the development of artistic careers through its Artists-in-Residence program which has graduated over 90 individuals who have gone on to establish well-known reputations in the art world at large.
The Museum's program of exhibitions have not only p ositioned African American art--past and present--within the discourse of the American mainstream, they have also expanded the scope of art historical literature through scholarly catalogues, brochures and pamphlets produced to accompany these projects.
Its programming has brought the African American experience alive for the public through lectures, dialogues, panel discussions and performances and through its interpretive programming both on-site and off-site for students and teachers.
