Tannersville is located in Greene County in the Southern Region of the state between Palenville and Lexington on Hwy 23A near Haines Falls.

Its name derived from its early tanning industry, which continued until the supply of hemlock bark was exhausted. Well-known residents have included: Mary Mapes Dodge, author of "Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates".
