Hamilton is located in southwestern Ohio in Butler County (of which it is the county seat) 20 miles north of Cincinnati on the banks of the Great Miami River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 61,808, an increase of 370 since 1990.Settled as a frontier fort in the late 1700's, the City of Hamilton is rich in history with over 200 years of heritage. It has been described by some as "a place where yesterday's charm meets tomorrow's vision." They offer plays, musicals, and hands-on performing arts classes at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts throughout the year. Additionally, the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra and the Greater Hamilton Civic Theater offer performances on the campus of Miami University-Hamilton. Golfers can choose from Hamilton Elks Country Club, a 27-hole faciltiy as well as Potter's Park Golf Course, Twin Run Golf Course and Vista Verde Golf Club, each a public 18-hole layout. Other local attractions include the Lane-Hooven House.
