"The Golden Bear" |
One of the true giants of the PGA tour, Jack Nicklaus, who was born in 1940, came out of Ohio State University with a pedigree. The child prodigy from Columbus had won the Ohio State Open at age 16 and two U.S. Amateurs by the age of 21.Nicklaus joined the Tour in 1962 and battled the likes of legendary Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson. He won the U.S. Open, one of golf's four "Major" tournaments--in an 18-hole playoff with Palmer in that first year. He gained instant respect for both his technique, strength and heady play. He was once compared to a "combination of Secretariat and Einstein." Generally considered the greatest to ever play the game, Nicklaus' accomplishments include a record 18 Major championships (with 19 second places), 73 Tour wins (second only to Sam Snead) and over 80 wins including the Senior (or "Champions") Tour and Player of the Year and Leading Money Winner eight times each. In addition, Nicklaus has designed (or helped on) about 200 top courses world wide.
