Waterville is located in northwestern Ohio in
Lucas County about 15 miles south of
Toledo,
Maumee Bay and
Lake Erie on the banks of the
Maumee River.
Though pioneers had called the area home since 1817, it wasn't until 1830 that John Pray laid out the village and began drawing a plat map. Waterville is the second oldest plat in the county. The original plat consisted of 50 lots and the area where the former Waterville Elementary School now stands was designated as the public square, where the townspeople tethered their cows to graze. The village was incorporated some 50 years later.
Mary Jane Thurston State Park lies just 10 miles southwest of town for those that enjoy the outdoor life. In addition, the town puts on the Roche de Boeuf Festival in late September. The festival's theme is derived from the French for "Rock of the Ox." It refers to a rock formation in the Maumee River which French-speaking settlers thought resembled a buffalo. Fallen Timbers Fairways provides 18 holes of golf to the public.
