Independence

Independence was located in western Oklahoma in what is now Custer County. It was estabished in 1892 as a government town before actual statehood in 1907. Legend has it that the town was a victim of robbery three times in the first two months of existence. After a peek poulation of about 300 in 1900, the town dwindled after the railroad bypassed it in favor of other locations.
