Lake Murray is located south central Oklahoma occupying parts of Carter County
and Love County
along the east side of Interstate 35
and U.S. Highway 77 south of Ardmore
. The 5,700-acre lake, created in 1937 when the WPA erected a dam here, has 150 miles of shoreline and is the centerpiece of popular Lake Murray Resort Park
, Oklahoma's first. One of the landmarks here is Turner Tower Nature Museum, a 4-story castle-like rock structure originally created as a governors' retreat in the 1930s by the WPA.
Fishing for bass, catfish and crappie plus boating, scuba diving and other water sports all take place on and in this crystal-clear lake.
Facilities include a full-service marina, camping sites--some with full hook-ups, some with partial hook-ups and some tent sites--a lodge and over 80 cabins.
