Located just outside Williamston on U.S. Highway 13/17, the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge is home to more than 191 species of birds and many other animals such as otters, deer and beaver. It was established in 1989 to protect and enhance wetlands and natural habitats. Two refuge tracts offer an informal trail system where you can hike, birdwatch and observe wildlife. These are accessible from U.S. 17 North. The refuge is open to the public free of charge daily during daylight hours.
