The Guelph Civic Museum is located in a handsome Georgian structure built in 1847 of local limestone. The history of the community since its founding by John Galt in 1827 is traced inside. The Museum opened at the Guelph market building in 1967 as a Centennial project. In 1980, the museum moved to its present location. The building has also served as a rooming house and the Knights of Columbus Hall. Two floors of exhibits depict the past through a collection of artifacts, photographs and archival material, most of which has been generously donated by public-spirited citizens. The gift shop contains publications on local history, material related to John McCrae, historic postcards, note paper and items related to current exhibitions.
