Kingston City Hall

Kingston's City Hall was constructed of limestone and completed in 1844. Popular legend maintains that it was built to serve as the seat of the provincial government. In fact, it was built as a city hall. At each end of its 250 foot-long facade, its sharp end corners immediately begin an almost lyrical curve to the back. In the finest tradition of classical masters, the straight line and the curve provide subtle counterpoint throughout the building. City Hall's ground floor windows are set in segmented arches while the second floor windows seem part of a graceful arcade. The structure is topped by a beautifully proportioned dome 30 feet in diameter. The dome has sixteen windows with a clock facing in each of four directions. The height fromthe bottom of the drum to the top of the cupola is 55 feet.
