Scottish immigrants settled the town in the early 1800's. It is said the town got its name because of the large number of surnames beginning with `Mac.` One of the largest Highland gatherings in North America is held in Maxville in early August with the Glengarry Highland Games. The town is also the site of the North American Pipe Band Competition.

Vermont Maple Festival St Albans VT April26-28 Pancake breakfast and maple buffet, the annual “Sap Run” race, exhibits and sugarhouse tours, antiques, crafts, cooking demonstrations, youth talent, fiddlers’ shows, and a Grand Parade featuring teen “Maple Ambassadors.”
Franklin County Fair Malone NY August3-11 This annual county fair, taking place in late summer, schedules events such as: Rooster Crowing Contest, Truck & Tractor Pull, Horse Show, Clothing Revue Grandstand, 4-H Goat Showmanship/4-H Goat Costume Driving Class.
